Nothing causes more debate about the proper role of technology, the primacy of human participation, and the limits of current technology than a consideration of the human/computer interface.  Where do we draw the line?

We work from several main points:

  • Usability comes first,
  • AI augments humans, not the other way around, and
  • The current web approaches are quite stunted.

Information Appliances and the Chasm

Don Norman of Nielsen-Norman (and Unext) combines his long-standing research on usability with the chasm perspective to make some very interesting points about needs of users and approaches to technology.  Just as we cross the chasm from early adopters to pragmatists, we should expect to shift from "technology centered" design to "user centered" design.  One more reason why so many high technology products fail - they stay technology focused.  For web sites in general, and e-commerce in particular, this is a very useful lesson.

How well has Unext applied these lessons, and what about moving education online?  This has more than (as they say) academic interest.  As we move to tutoring and training our customers, distance education is a powerful conceptual model for much of online marketing.

BTW - information appliance means we don't notice it anymore - it disappears into everyday life.
